The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) is an important data resource for cancer biologists and oncologists. Even five years ago this would have seemed preposterous--way too expensive, way too scientifically complicated to analyze. It started as a pilot project to see if they really could comprehensively catalogue all of the genomic aberrations in a number of cancers. TCGA began in 2006 as a pilot project focused on three cancer types: lung, ovarian, and glioblastoma. TCGA: The Cancer Genome Atlas Cancer is a complex disease that impacts the lives of millions of Americans. The project will enable new discoveries and tools that will provide the basis for new cancer therapies, diagnostics, and preventive strategies.
